Who (Really) is in the Way of the Strategic Plan?
So the plan does not happen unless there is constant, focused follow up that keeps those responsible focused and productive. If you don’t follow up, it does not happen. So if you don’t follow up, who will?
It’s one of the biggest conundrums facing small and medium size growing companies. In many cases the person charged with the implementation of the strategic plan either does not have the time to do the follow up or is not inclined to do it. So what is the answer? While there is no single answer, no silver bullet, there are definite steps that can be taken to mitigate the situation.
The first step, as with any major life changing event, is to admit there is a problem and then resolve to solve the problem. It is important to realize that this is a major event and will require a major change in the way you operate. We think this is the most important of all steps and it is the one step we see most owners and managers ignore or omit. The realization that there is a problem and the problem is “THEM” is a revelation to most owners and managers. The tendency is to blame the staff and their inability “to get the job done”, when all the time the culprit is in the mirror.
There are a few choices to be made to get ahead of this and start the plan moving. Either modify your behavior and make/take time to follow up or delegate the follow up to a competent person. One way or the other it must be done for you and your company to be more successful.
We are having great success teaching and implementing these methods and skills and our clients love it!
